so, we had a discussion in an IRC meeting the other day for the
franchise group which evolved into ... should we rename "startup" to
"intergalactic"?
why, you ask?
well, the name "startup" is kind of limited in scope, really. it focuses
on the early stages of the organization, rather than continued
communication between freegeeks. added to that, there is also the
"franchise" list, which reviews applications for new freegeeks (and
trademark issues?), which needs to be somewhat private.
i'd like all discussion that could possibly be useful to other freegeeks
and freegeek-like organizations to be made public... soooo
there's a few different approaches that could be taken, some ideas
discussed at the meeting:
* start a new list for intergalactic, and keep the startup list too
the danger here is mailing list propegation, making it harder to know
where the appropriate place to post something is (this is the issue
that prompted the discussion, actually).
* explicitly re-purpose the startup list to include the broader scope of
intergalactic in it's description
this has the advantage of not really having to change much of anything,
the disadvantage being that the name "startup" is slightly misleading if
it's also largely about continued communication between freegeeks.
* start a new, separate list for intergalactic, and make the the startup
list archive-only (i.e. no new posts)
this starts us off with a clean slate, at risk of possibly loosing
someone in the shuffle. we might have to update a fair amount of
documentation in the wiki as well.
so, members of the startup list, where should we go with this?
live well,
