the wiki at freegeek.org. I feel like I have a pretty good overall
feel for the organization, but I still have a few questions, some may
seem random, but they're just to fill gaps in my understanding of the
process.
1. About how many donors require a receipt for tax purposes? In
other words, do you have many people that just want to get rid of the
stuff and don't care for a receipt?
We look at it from the standpoint that ALL donors will want a receipt, monetary or otherwise. (TN Reply)
2. For the build program, how do you deal with a computer that is
partially built when someone has to leave? Do they have their own
storage cubby or work space?
We do not currently have a facility as of yet, so a few volunteers are doing the work out of their homes. (TN Reply)
3. I'm finding filing paperwork, and actually starting work, is a
chicken and egg kind of problem. I'm sure some of you started working
before you had your tax id number. How do you go about collecting
funds, signing leases, or doing business in general before you're
"official"?
We started out without our paperwork, but also made it a priority to get it done ASAP. We have had some donors that have donated without it AND got the paperwork done in time to post date them a legit receipt. We were also in a "pending" status with the mothership. (TN Reply)
4. How many board members have you started with? I realize the state
minimum for me may be different than the rest of you, but is there a
good working number out there?
Our by-laws state no less than 3 and no more than 12 at any given time with a initial one year term and if re-elected and accepted, and two year commitment thereafter. (TN Reply)
I've been going around drafting potential board members from a wide
variety of backgrounds, but all who believe strongly in at least one
of the three goals (bridging digital divide, recycling, education).
Responses have been very positive.
Thanks in advance to all who will take the time to answer.
Eric
