Shawn,
As a fellow start-up "optimist", much less farther along than you, I'd
like to lend my voice of encouragement, and wish you success in
spreading the way of FG.
As another long-time IT support guy, I'd like point out that
(philosophical issues aside) I've never seen a "cheap" license for a
microsoft product. Speaking from a business planning perspective, The
logistics of providing tech support for win98, win2000, AND linux boxen
for any significant number of customers would scare me. Do the 98 and
2000 licenses include ANY updates? What is the cost to the customer for
additional virus and spyware protection, and application software? Is
the recycled hardware you provide going to be able to support running
Open Office on a machine that might have enough RAM to barely boot?
Of course, I cannot speak to the issue of how it might affect a
franchise relationship with the mothership, but I think the rational of
the folk in Portland to sever tech support relationships with users who
insist on "leaving" linux is well thought out.
